POLAB Professional Lighting honoured at German Design Award 2024

The VALDUR street luminaire is named a winner in the category “Excellent Product Design — Lighting” at German Design Award 2024, one of the world's most selective design prizes.

This year's winners of German Design Award have been announced. The prestigious prize celebrates international companies, agencies, and service providers from all sectors, as well as artistic and influential organisations. It recognises products and projects in the section “Excellent Product Design”, category “Lighting”.

The VALDUR street luminaire from Professional Lighting POLAB introduces a new approach to the use of composite materials in street lighting. The luminaire is constructed from SMC composite — a thermoformed material that offers considerably greater resistance to corrosion compared with conventional aluminium. This material choice results in a longer service life, lower maintenance requirements, and a reduced environmental impact across the product's full lifecycle.

VALDUR is specifically developed for coastal, marine, and industrial environments where conventional metallic construction struggles with premature deterioration. The design combines an SMC composite housing with modern LED modules and intelligent control systems, resulting in a luminaire engineered for the environments where operational reliability and longevity matter most.

“It is the purpose of product design to make products both more efficient and more accessible — to improve the user experience and solve real problems. German Design Award recognises products that live up to that promise. We are proud to present VALDUR from Professional Lighting POLAB as one of this year's winners.”

For Professional Lighting POLAB, German Design Award 2024 represents an external confirmation that the core of the design — material selection and service life thinking — constitutes a meaningful contribution to the field of industrial design. No company may nominate itself for German Design Award. All candidates must be nominated by an external party, which means the award is preceded by two independent assessments: first an initiative to nominate, and then an impartial jury evaluation.

“VALDUR began as a response to a concrete problem: luminaire housings corroding long before their LED modules. German Design Award confirms that our solution — choosing materials for the environment rather than convention — is also assessed as correct from a design standpoint. It is a recognition that means a great deal to the whole team.”
