About VALDUR
PDF 5Heat dissipation was a key part of developing VALDUR in SMC composite.
We had seen how corrosion can affect aluminium luminaire housings, particularly in coastal and industrial environments, but also in cities and other polluted areas.
For a luminaire intended to remain outdoors for decades, we wanted a material that naturally resists corrosion, without relying on a protective coating that ages over time.
The result was VALDUR, made from SMC composite with a specially developed solution for heat dissipation.

iF Design Award · German Design Award
PDF 7VALDUR has won the iF Design Award and German Design Award, and was named a finalist in the JEC World Innovation Awards in Paris and the CAMX Unsurpassed Innovation Award in the USA – international recognition for design, material selection and innovation.

Manufacturing and compression moulding
PDF 8The housing is compression moulded in a heated tool under 400 tonnes of force for 5 minutes. Heat cures the composite into its permanent shape, while the glass fibre provides strength.

SMC composite
PDF 9In aluminium luminaires, the housing itself is often used to dissipate heat from the LED module.
To manufacture VALDUR in SMC composite, we needed a different cooling solution.
During development, thermal tests were conducted at Signify/Philips in Eindhoven to check that the LED module operated within the correct temperature limits.

Material benefits that make a difference.
PDF 10SMC thermoset composite combines low weight, corrosion resistance and electrical insulation in a housing built for long-term use.
The material needs no protective coating against corrosion, and the composite does not form galvanic couples.
It also allows radio signals to pass through, enabling wireless control integrated into the luminaire.

A natural choice – for coasts, cities and industry.
PDF 11Corrosive environments are not limited to the coast.
When different metals are in electrical contact and exposed to moisture, they can act like a small battery. An electric current arises and one metal deteriorates. This is called galvanic corrosion.
Road salt and pollution can make moisture on metal surfaces more electrically conductive and accelerate the attack. Galvanic corrosion can therefore also occur in urban and industrial environments.

SMC-komposit – a well-established material.
PDF 12Trains thunder past. Stones fly. Inside the yellow SMC cover, sensitive electronics are safely protected. A balise must last at least 30 years in service, and an SMC composite housing does not corrode, withstands impacts and vibration, and outlasts the electronics it protects.
Easier for the installer
PDF 13VALDUR weighs approximately 3.5–5.1 kg, depending on the version.
This reduces strain on the installer, especially when several luminaires are fitted during a working day.
The low weight is also an advantage when transporting luminaires and carrying them to the installation site.

Colour and appearance
PDF 15SMC composite can be produced in several colours and painted for the desired colour and finish, without risk of corrosion in the composite beneath the coating.

Drivers
PDF 17Philips drivers from Signify are matched to the selected power and control. Depending on the model, dimming and programming functions allow the lighting to be adapted to the needs of the site.
Philips Xitanium Xtreme
- LP - Lite programmable (standard)
- FP - Full programmable
- SR - Sensor ready
- CR - Connected ready
All four families support DynaDimmer dimming, but their connections and functions differ.
LP - Lite programmable
The driver can be programmed for automatic night-time dimming during selected periods. It also provides a 1–10 V control connection and the CLO-lite and DynaDimmer functions.
FP - Full programmable
For projects requiring DALI or specific lighting control methods. Digital control via DALI, several other control methods, and energy and diagnostic data. CLO, DynaDimmer, Luminaire Data DALI 251, Energy Data DALI 252, Diagnostics DALI 253.
CLO/CLO-lite Constant light output. The driver can compensate for the LED module's predicted lumen depreciation using a set profile. LP has the simpler CLO-lite version. The function is programmed during manufacture.
DynaDimmer Programmed dimming during parts of the night without an external control system. Correct configuration and suitable daily switching on and off are required.

Advanced drivers for a control node and sensors
PDF 19Xitanium Xtreme SR and CR drivers can be used in a luminaire with two Zhaga Book 18 sockets: one on top for a control node (type A) and one underneath for, for example, an occupancy sensor (type B). Choose according to the project's control and monitoring needs.
SR - Sensor Ready
Supports a type A control node and a type B sensor simultaneously through two Zhaga sockets. Provides energy metering and configuration-dependent operating data. D4i, CLO, DynaDimmer, Luminaire Data DALI 251, Energy Data DALI 252, Diagnostics DALI 253.
CR - Connected Ready
Supports a type A control node and a type B sensor simultaneously through two Zhaga sockets. Provides energy and operating data and external DALI support. Connection and cable length are verified for the selected driver and control system. D4i, CLO, DynaDimmer, Luminaire Data DALI 251, Energy Data DALI 252, Diagnostics DALI 253.
Additional information
Dimming: The datasheets specify 10–100%, but the lowest possible level also depends on the set LED current and the driver's minimum output current. LP's built-in night schedule cannot switch off completely; FP and SR can.
Settings: A function available in the driver is not necessarily activated on delivery. Specify the required version, programming, and energy and operating data needs when ordering.

LED modules
PDF 21Philips Fortimo FastFlex range
Choose light to meet the project's requirements for energy efficiency, colour rendering, atmosphere and consideration for the surroundings. Colour temperature and light quality are selected through LED modules and lenses to suit the project.
Fortimo FastFlex UHE – more light, low energy use
UHE stands for Ultra High Efficiency and is designed to deliver very high luminous efficacy. It suits roads, car parks and larger areas where good lighting must be combined with low installed power, lower energy consumption and reduced operating costs.
ColorRevive – clearer colours at low light levels
ColorRevive enhances colour contrast even at low light levels. Objects, materials and people become easier to distinguish, creating a clearer and more comfortable lighting environment. A good choice for streets, walkways, squares and other urban areas where visual experience and orientation matter.
Colour temperature through optics
Warmer light can also be achieved by combining the LED module with AMBER or SPECTRE lenses.

Color Ambiance – light that shapes a place
PDF 23Color Ambiance prioritises a pleasant, atmospheric lighting experience. The character of the light highlights colours, materials and architecture without making the area feel harshly lit. Suitable for parks, residential areas, city centres and places where lighting should also contribute to atmosphere and identity.
NightGlow – warm light for sensitive nightscapes
NightGlow provides very warm 2000 K light with a distinct amber character and a limited short-wave blue component. It is designed for places where lighting must serve its purpose while considering nightscapes, residential environments and wildlife: parks, waterfront promenades, nature paths and areas near sensitive habitats.
Fortimo FastFlex HE – high luminous efficacy
The HE range combines high luminous efficacy with warm light. VALDUR uses HE modules for 2200 K and 2700 K. Other colour temperatures are selected to suit the project. POLAB confirms the LED module and version when ordering.

LEDiL - Innovative optics
PDF 25STRADA range
Optimised distributions for roads, parks and open areas – efficient and uniform.
SPECTRE range
Reduces blue light with less light loss than its LEDiL Amber predecessor.
Shielding accessories
Shield rear light. White gives slightly higher efficiency through reflection; black blocks most effectively.
STRADA-2X2R range
Reflector-based optics combining high efficiency with low glare.

Surge protection (SPD)
PDF 27The Philips drivers used in VALDUR have built-in protection against voltage transients, also known as voltage spikes.
For added protection, luminaires can be ordered with a separate SPD providing further protection against mains transients and indirect lightning discharges.
Status indication and protection level are specified for the SPD selected for the project.

Luminaire control
PDF 29Control tailored to the project.
VALDUR can be equipped with Zhaga sockets for motion, occupancy and daylight sensors, for example, and external communication nodes.
Lighting can respond to activity and daylight: for example, increasing as someone approaches and dimming when the area is empty to reduce energy use.
Luminaires can also connect to a gateway and central control system for monitoring, grouping and scheduling. Depending on the system, energy use, operating hours and fault messages can also be monitored remotely.
VALDUR can be adapted to control systems from different suppliers. Functions and compatibility are checked for each project. The chosen control system determines which driver and connections the luminaire needs.

AirGlow – fully integrated wireless control
PDF 31One advantage of composite is that VALDUR can be supplied with LumenRadio's AirGlow built into the luminaire.
The radio-transparent composite housing lets signals pass through, eliminating the need for an external node.
AirGlow creates a wireless mesh network in which luminaires and sensors communicate with each other.
The system supports applications such as scheduled dimming, motion-based control and joint control of several luminaires. Basic operation can take place locally via a mobile phone without a recurring subscription.
