Coastal street lighting

Salt, moisture and sea winds place demands on the complete luminaire. VALDUR combines a corrosion-free SMC housing with lighting specified for the site — from seafront streets and footpaths to quayside areas.

Start with the site's actual exposure

Salt and moisture

Salt dissolved in moisture can increase corrosion risks for metal parts. Assess materials, seals, fixings and contact between dissimilar metals together.

Wind, installation and servicing

Check the column, bracket, cable entry and access for inspection. A corrosion-free housing does not replace correct installation or maintenance of other components.

Light where it is needed

Select optics, light levels and controls for the road, footpath and nearby homes. Harbour and marina lighting requires an assessment of each area and task.

Corrosion resistance starts with the SMC housing

SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) is a non-metallic, glass-fibre-reinforced thermoset composite. The material itself cannot undergo metal-based electrochemical corrosion. The housing therefore needs no protective paint against metal corrosion, unlike a metal housing that relies on a protective paint system.

This applies to the housing, not automatically to metallic components, electronics or seals. UV, heat, moisture and mechanical exposure still need assessment. IP66 and IK08 describe other properties; they are not corrosion classifications.

Smögen: part of the Sotenäs project

Smögenbryggan is part of Sotenäs Municipality's VALDUR project. The project uses AirGlow from LumenRadio for wireless control. POLAB's reference information distinguishes evaluation, installation and subsequent sales:

2024
2 luminaires for evaluation
2025
150 luminaires installed in the municipality
2026
A further 140 luminaires sold to the municipality

These figures cover the municipal project, not only Smögenbryggan. The 2026 sales figure is not a confirmed installation total. The reference demonstrates coastal use; it does not establish the luminaire's service life.

Warranties and documentation for your project

VALDUR has a 20-year corrosion warranty and a 5-year functional warranty, subject to the warranty terms. Read the scope and exclusions alongside the product sheet and installation instructions.

Send the location, intended use, mounting height, column spacing and known environmental requirements. POLAB can help with model selection and a lighting calculation for the proposed configuration.

VALDUR is also used on urban streets, roads and industrial sites. Coastal lighting is one of several applications.
